Is 142 a Good IQ Score?

A century ago, Terman's original Stanford–Binet manual labeled scores at this level "genius or near genius." Today's professional tests dropped that word — the current child scale simply says extremely high for everything past its top line. Whatever the label, 142 is 12 points beyond the Mensa cut-off of 130, which itself marks roughly the top 2 in 100.

Second, research finds no standard weakness that comes with a very high score — no reliable social or emotional cost. People at this level vary as widely as anyone in everything the test doesn't touch.

Personality research adds that steady follow-through carries weight beyond ability at every level. At this rarity, what published research can say about any one person is genuinely limited.
