Is 90 a Good IQ Score?

An IQ of 90 puts you in the same range as most of the people around you. The scale is built with 100 as its center. About two thirds of everyone scores between 85 and 115. This is the range that ordinary school, work and daily life are pitched at.

The test measures one thing: how you handled its reasoning puzzles on one day. It doesn't measure drive, creativity, honesty, humor or the skills you've built through practice. Research backs this up. A large review of long-term studies found IQ has a real link to schooling and job level. The link to income is much smaller. Most of what separates people's lives sits outside the score.

Newer workplace research points the same way. A major 2022 analysis found reasoning scores explain a smaller slice of job performance than earlier estimates claimed. Inside every job, people across the whole average range do well or badly for other reasons.

A five-point swing on a retake is normal, so treat nearby scores as the same result.

People scoring in the average range handle the reasoning demands of everyday life without trouble. Research on work and daily tasks finds that score differences matter least on familiar, practiced ground. Routine problem-solving, learning by doing, and skills built over time are all fully open at this level.

Where higher scorers pull ahead, studies find, is on tasks that are both new and complex — dense unfamiliar material, abstract puzzles under time pressure. At this level those things are doable, but they may take more time or more repetition.

The spread inside this group is enormous, since about half of everyone is in it. Two people with the same average score can differ in almost everything else — knowledge of their field, people skills, persistence, training. Research finds those differences often count for more.

A 84 on a Cattell-scale test is the same result as 90 here. This is the most common reason two tests seem to disagree.

Mensa accepts 130 and above on this scale. 90 is 40 points short.

Most jobs are held mainly by people in this range, so this list is long company. Published studies show these jobs' usual worker ranges cover this group:

• Office clerks and secretaries — organized, detail-driven work
• Electricians and skilled trades — complex skills built through apprenticeship
• Police and protective services — judgment under pressure
• Dispatchers — juggling live information
• Insurance sales agents — people skills plus product knowledge
• Registered nurses — technical training applied hands-on

People inside each job vary widely, and plenty score above or below this range. The figures come from Gottfredson's 1997 review and Hauser's Wisconsin study.

It's a solid, normal score. The scale centers on 100, and about half of all people land in this range. Average describes the group, not your ceiling. Research finds that within this range, things like effort, training and personality separate people's results far more than the score itself does.

You scored higher than about 25 in 100 people. Roughly 75 percent score at your level or above. Scores pile up near 100 and thin out fast toward both ends. So small point differences near the middle move you past a lot of people.

Mensa's line is 130 on this scale — roughly the top 2 in 100 scorers. 90 is 40 points below that. Mensa accepts only supervised tests, so online scores can't qualify anyone. Keep in mind almost everyone is below the line: about 98 in 100 people don't qualify.

Scores wobble. On a retake, most people land between 85 and 95. Sleep, focus and familiarity with the question types all nudge the number, and short online tests swing more than supervised ones. Big lasting jumps are unusual, so treat any score within a few points as the same result.
